Kurio Tab 2: great kids tablets with google play

Kurio 2, one of the Kids Tablets with Google Play

Kurio tab 2 is an action-packed gadget made exclusively for kids and its actions are facilitated by the powerful Intel processor. This kids tablet with Google play has Wi-Fi, 8GB internal storage, high resolution front and rear cameras, speakers and unlimited parental control over their children’s activities by Kurio Genius Internet Filtering system. It is available pre-installed with Kurio Motion single player games of soccer, swimming and running. This feature enables kids to play while mimicking some real-life actions. The parental area is user friendly and also password protected and you can set time-limits or restrict access to some websites. Nonetheless, the Kurio Tab 2 comes with its own internet filtering system with extreme caution while browsing and filtering the activity of application.

Features

  • Control the duration children use it
  • Internal storage of 8GB expandable to 32GB using a micro SD card
  • Web filter and restriction to barred websites
  • Demarcate which apps can be accessed
  • Set up multiple profiles
  • Google Play integrated

Design

This tablet has a 7 inch display and is covered with protective rubber to safeguard it from damage in case of accidental drops. The rubber also gives the tablet a sleek shape. The rear plastic cover, which is hard to remove, fits into the bumper at separate places giving two viewing angles.kurio tab 2

There is a micro HDMI output, a rear and front camera with 0.3 and 2.1 megapixels respectively, a mono speaker, Bluetooth, a headphone jack and a micro SD slot with expanding available memory of up to 32 GB. The micro USB port can be used to charge the tablet and read USB OTG (on-the-go) to retrieve files on a fitting flash drive.

Even though this tab has mind blowing specifications, the display is below par. Kids tablet are famed for their low resolution screens, with less spectacular viewing angles. Kurio tab 2 1024×600 resolution has no IPS screen and consequently the colors don’t look as vibrant.

Kurio Tab 2 performance is also mixed; equipped with a quad-core processor makes its operations fast though some applications may take longer to run. The screen may also not register light touches and may require a firm press.

Audio

The quality of sound is above average though not that much amazing. To parents, it is a relief that sound produced does not get too loud. However, audio sounds much better when the tab is in its case and put flat on its back.

Access to applications

Other than the pre-installed apps, unlimited access to the Google Play Store and Android Lollipop OS makes even more applications readily accessible. The pre-loaded e-books, apps and games can be accessed after formulating an account and child’s profile can be used for hours before updating or downloading new apps. Other system Google apps include Gmail, Maps, Photos, You Tube which are automatically authorized in each profile. It is amazing how Kurio utilizes Android profiles and not its own system to make the transition between profiles much simpler. This also means that as your child grows, they can get rid of the bumper and become fully fledged in using the Lollipop system.

Parental control

The system of parental control within the Kurio tab was very close to winning the best-in-class awards. To access parental control, run the Kurio Genius app on the home screen of the Parent mode. Here, you can set up to eight profiles. The Kurio Genius app will use the dates of birth you enter to filter by gauging what is recommended for minors at that age.

Kurio Genius gives parents control over the applications that children can operate and time they can use the tab per day. Applications of Google such as Gmail, Chrome or YouTube can also be restricted. The tab can be set to reject unauthorized USB drives from reading it. If time is up for your kids to play with the tablet, you can key in the lock code to increase this by twenty minutes.

The system Email app gives children access to their email addresses. Parents need not to worry since they can also control their child’s use of this app, approve which messages they can see and also add new contacts to the trusted list.

In the last 2-3 years, tablets for kids have drastically improved from being just a toy tablet to a proper tablet. According to Kurio, it’s the safest tablet for kids. This tablet might not be perfect, yet it is a better choice if you don’t want to give your iPad to your child. Priced at $79.99 on Amazon when reviewed, Kurio Tab 2 features a 7-inch screen with Android 5.0 (Lollipop).

Hardware

Kurio Tab 2 is a quite decent looking Android tablet that comes with a rubber bumper for protection. Not only does this rubber bumper prevent the corners of the tablet from damages, but it also prevents the tablet from damages due to inevitable falls during its use.

There is also a removable plastic cover at the back which slots into the bumper in two places to offer two viewing angles but it’s hard to attach. Coming to the cameras, Kurio Tab 2 has a front and a rear camera of 0.3 MP and 2.1 MP respectively. It also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a micro HDMI output. It is also one of the few kids friendly tablets with integrated google play features.

It also features a headphone jack, mono speaker and a microSD card slot for adding up to 32GB along with the internal 8GB. Out of this 8GB, only 1 GB is available to the user. The micro USB port available is used for charging and syncing, it also supports USB on-the-go (OTG) so that you can access files stored on a pen drive through this tablet.

The hardware of the tablet is well built but it lacks having good screen resolution. 1024×600 resolution of Kurio Tab 2 is same as the new Amazon Fire. We are yet to see a tablet with good resolution in kids segment. As Kurio didn’t opt for IPS screen, colors won’t look right unless you are looking straight-on.

Coming to the performance, Kurio Tab 2 features a 1.3GHz quad-core processor (MediaTek MTK8127) which is speedy enough for apps available for kids. The presence of microHDMI slot means that you can connect your tablet to a TV and play multiplayer games on a bigger screen as well.

Software

The software is equally important as hardware on a kids’ tablet. I’d say it’s even more important than hardware. It comes with few pre-loaded apps such that once you have set up a parent’s account and your child’s profile, it’s ready to go with hours of fun before you need to install any new apps.

The tablet also has a Kidoz TV app which shows selected content from YouTube which is selectively for kids. Similarly, another app names Kidoz Buzz features home-recorded clips of animals doing funny things to experts from films or TV shows. Along with this, Kurio Tab 2 gives parents full access to Android Lollipop operating system, unlike many such tablets available for kids.

Google Apps available in the tablet include Play Store, Gmail, YouTube, Maps, and Photos. Out of all these, Photos is authorized by default in each kid’s profile. Another important thing to note is that Kurio Tab 2 uses android profiles rather than using its own. This feature makes it easy to access and manage content.

One for benefit of this feature is that once the kid grows up, he or she can have access to the full operating system, effectively removing the need of buying your kid a new tablet when he or she is grown up.

If you download an app in Kurio Tab 2 from Play Store, you are asked to assign a category to it like Ebooks, Games, Media etc. You have to assign each particular app to a category so that it appears at the proper place on profile management interface. In Kurio Tab 2, you can also set ‘authorized hours’ between which your child can access the tablet and ‘daily play time’ which is the number of hours your child can play on the tablet.

Though multiple time periods in a day can’t be set but different times on different days can be done. Also, a warning sign is displayed when the time of usage is almost up and parents can add a few minutes by entering a PIN.

Kurio Tab 2 also enables a parent to limit how long the child can use the tablet continuously and how long they must wait to use it again. Along with time control, app management and profile settings, Kurio Tab 2 has a web access panel in its Kurio Genius interface as well to do web filtering and web lists.kurio tab 2
